The Dubai Police on Wednesday announced that the death of popular Keralite businessman Joy Arakkal was a case of suicide. Arakkal had died on April 23; at the time, no cause of death was given.

Arakkal was the managing director of the Innova Group of companies, which has interests in the petroleum sector. He was a recipient of the UAE's Gold Card visa, which is valid for 10 years and is aimed at investors.

Gulf News, a UAE publication, reported Arakkal had jumped to his death from a building in the Business Bay area of Dubai. “We received a report about a man plunging to his death from the 14th floor of a friend's building on Thursday. The businessman committed suicide over financial problems,” Brigadier Abdullah Khadim Bin Sorour, director of Bur Dubai Police Station, told Gulf News.

The Dubai Police have ruled out any foul play behind the death of Joy Arakkal.

The Arakkal family's lawyer told Gulf News that M.K. Raghavan, the Lok Sabha MP for Kozhikode, and R. Harikumar of Elite Group in the UAE had been instrumental in getting clearance from the Indian government to fly home Arakkal's body. While India has issued a no-objection certificate, the family is awaiting clearance from the UAE government to take his body to his native district of Wayanad in Kerala for burial.

Arakkal was known to be a philanthropist and built houses for the poor and conducted weddings of poor families. He became famous in 2018 when work was completed on his 25,000 sq.ft mansion in Mananthavady, Wayanad. The 'Arakkal Palace' had been touted as one of the biggest houses in Kerala.
