Gone are the days when Saina Nehwal and P.V. Sindhu were the only female faces of Indian badminton. India’s youngest sensation, Tanvi Sharma, won the BWF Taipei Open Super 300 tournament on Sunday in just 36 minutes.
Through this victory, the former junior world No. 1 became the youngest champion in the history of the tournament. Tanvi surpassed Korean doubles player Lee Yong Dae, who reached the men's doubles final in 2006, as the youngest champion.
The Taipei crown has made Tanvi the fourth Indian women's singles shuttler to win a Super 300 tournament after Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu, and Devika Sihag.
Hailing the youngster, the Yonex Sunrise India’s Instagram handle wrote “the future is here”, as she defeated Vietnam's sixth seed Nguyen Thuy Linh, who is ranked World No. 25, in straight games 21-16, 21-16 in the summit clash.
While the match progressed in favour of Tanvi, the commentator was heard saying, “the pressure is on Nguyen Thuy Linh… great work from the teenager.” During the match, Tanvi won 21 consecutive rallies, while Nguyen won 16. A total of four game points were won by Tanvi and none by Nguyen. The last time Tanvi faced Nguyen on the court was at the 2025 US Open, which Tanvi also went on to win.
Tanvi is coached by P.V. Sindhu's former mentor Park Tae-sang. At the age of 16, she played her maiden Super 300 final at the 2025 US Open. She was the runner-up at the 2024 Odisha Masters Super 100 and the 2025 Guwahati Masters Super 100. She was also part of the Indian team that won a historic maiden gold medal at the Asian Team Championships.
