Manchester United were said to be looking to find Benjamin Šeško an experienced strike partner so that workload management becomes easy, with enough room for the Slovenian to learn and evolve. However, according to a new report, the Premier League side will make an exception if they can get Igor Thiago from Brentford this summer.
Šeško is 23, while the Brazilian Thiago is 24. He is currently with the national team in the Americas for the FIFA World Cup after a stellar season for the Bees that saw him scoring 22 times and assisting once. His tally was second only to Erling Haaland's 27. Interestingly, Thiago's rise at Brentford was a direct consequence of Bryan Mbeumo leaving for United.
Brentford may demand £70 million for the striker, who is contracted until 2031 with an option to extend for another year. The sum, according to reports, is an attempt to stop United from pursuing the in-form striker.
Rasmus Højlund, Joshua Zirkzee, and Manuel Ugarte will all be allowed to leave United this summer as the club looks to make multiple signings. After bringing in two midfielders and a left winger, the Red Devils may sign a striker if the financial situation permits. They are thus open to offloading as many players as possible who are not core to Michael Carrick's project.
United's Technical Director Jason Wilcox believes Thiago is an investment worth making and is prepared to go the extra mile to get a deal done, another report said. Thiago was among the scorers on Sunday when Brazil registered a 6-2 friendly win over Panama.
While Manchester United finished the campaign third, ensuring a return to Champions League football, Brentford finished ninth, falling short of European qualification on goal difference. This could influence Thiago to join Mbeumo at Old Trafford if the club is willing to make the necessary financial commitment.
