How hard is it to defend the FIFA World Cup title? Well, there are only two teams qualified to answer that question — Italy and, of course, Brazil. Lionel Scaloni has retained the core of the squad that won at Qatar 2022 and went on to retain the Copa América in 2024, as he looks to enter the elite list alongside arch-rivals Brazil. Remember, this Lionel Messi-led team had topped South America's qualifying group with ease.
Since Qatar, Argentina have not faced European opponents, as the "Finalissima" game against Spain was cancelled due to the war in the Middle East. An ageing Messi is not helping either. It is debatable whether he still has the stamina and speed needed to perform at the highest level.
However, there is little doubt that the defending champions are still serious contenders for the prized trophy. Scaloni will have the incredible Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez in attack, while Messi is expected to play the role of the conductor. Scaloni's record as Argentina's all-time most decorated manager — two Copa Américas (2021 and 2024), a World Cup, and a Finalissima (2022) — gives him credit in the bank. One more World Cup would be the ideal gift that the team can give their legendary captain, who turns 39 soon.
