For a long time, it seemed like luck is deserting Sanju Samson in international cricket. However, that trend seems to be changing, if his selection in India's T20 World Cup 2026 squad is any indication. More than his selection, the fact that the selectors omitted Shubman Gill tells us that the Kerala batter is India's first-choice option to partner Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order.
While he basks in the glory of World Cup selection, more good news might be coming Samson's way, this time through the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sources close to the franchise suggest that the 31-year-old is set to be appointed the vice-captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for IPL 2026 with Ruturaj Gaikwad continuing as the team's captain.
Samson's entry to CSK came through a historic trade deal with Rajasthan Royals who got veteran Ravindra Jadeja and young all-rounder Sam Curran as part of a swap-plus-cash deal between CSK and RR. Samson's acquisition is the first time that CSK had opted for a proper trade in IPL history, their only previous trade being the cash deal involving Robin Uthappa before IPL 2021.

With CSK opting for a big change in strategy even in the IPL 2026 auctions, everything hints at MS Dhoni's possible retirement after the upcoming IPL season. With Samson as Gaikwad's deputy and three genuine wicket-keeping options in the squad, the management seem to have the bases covered when that big moment arrives, at least on paper.
There are three months still left for IPL 2026, so it could take time for CSK to make an official announcement in this regard. However, Samson's elevation to vice-captaincy seems a logical move, both for the franchise's team strategy and brand value. Whenever Dhoni decides to call it a day, there is no doubt that Samson will be the team's biggest superstar.
