Wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel was arrested today in West Bengal's Hooghly district on charges of sexual assault and criminal intimidation as per the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
A woman has alleged that the Bengal cricketer, who plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, had engaged in sexual acts with her under the pretext of marriage. The complaint was, reportedly, filed on June 23 at Mogra police station by the female medical student from Karnataka. She alleged that they had been in a relationship for more than three years.
"There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him,” Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police, Kunar Bhushan Singh, told PTI. “He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today.” Porel was taken into custody by Mogra police late on Monday night, and is expected to be presented before a court in Chinsurah.
Police sources told PTI that a case has been registered against Porel under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), notably Section 69, as well as provisions from the Information Technology Act.
“Abishek Porel illegally confined the complainant. He denied her food and deliberately kept her isolated. As a result... the complainant became physically weak and was unable to walk properly. Despite having a flight... she was compelled to seek immediate medical attention due to the injuries sustained," the FIR against Porel read.
The woman moved the Calcutta High Court, which directed the police to arrest him as part of the probe. During the earlier hearing, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed the Mogra police to seize all electronic devices, including Porel’s phone.
Porel has denied all the allegations.
Porel, who has travelled with India A to the UK and Australia, has scored 769 runs in 35 matches, including 108 in four innings last season. He made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 2021-22 season and has played 32 first-class and 23 List A matches.
