Political leaders cutting across party lines heaped praise on the Indian women's cricket team for winning its first-ever World Cup with a 52-run victory over South Africa.
Calling it a "spectacular win", Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the team's performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence.
"The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports," he said in a post on X.

Congratulating the team, President Droupadi Murmu said this "watershed moment" will take women's cricket to even higher levels of performance.
"My heartiest congratulations to each and every member of the Indian women's cricket team on winning the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025!,” Murmu wrote on X.
“They have created history by winning it for the first time. They have been playing well, and today they got the result befitting their talent and performance. This watershed moment will take women's cricket to even higher performances. I admire the way the girls have done India proud,” the President added.

India beat South Africa by 52 runs in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday to clinch their maiden World Cup title. Put into bat, India rode half-centuries from Shafali Verma (87) and Deepti Sharma (58) to post 298-7. In reply, South Africa were all out for 246 in 45.3 overs despite captain Laura Wolvaardt's knock of 101.
