He's recovering well. He's replying to us on phone that means he is doing absolutely fine. It is unfortunate what happened but the doctors are taking care of him. He'll be monitored for the next few days but nothing to be worried about.… pic.twitter.com/Wp7KYX20i4
In a Tuesday press conference ahead of the first match of the India-Australia T20I at Canberra, series captain Suryakumar Yadav said that the squad had been talking to him over the past two days.
"If he's been responding over the phone, it means he's stable. Besides, the doctor is also there. It's good he's talking, but he has said he would be careful for a few more days. He's talking to everyone, so everything is fine," Yadav said.
Iyer was admitted to the ICU after suffering internal bleeding from what seemed like a rib cage injury at first. The injury, which he sustained after a devastating roll onto his left side during a brilliant catch in the third India-Australia ODI, "could have been fatal", sources had told PTI yesterday.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement yesterday that it was a "laceration injury to the spleen".
"Doctors and physios said that what happened to Shreyas was unfortunate and a rare case, but then again, Shreyas is himself rare—with rare talent comes rare occurrences," Yadav said towards the end of the press conference with a chuckle, adding that he was "recovering really well".
However, it will take about a week for the 31-year-old to be declared physically fit to be flown to India. He will also not be a part of the squad for the India-Australia T20I series.
