To say that Pakistan cricket is unpredictable cannot be called an understatement anymore, nor is it a cliche. Their on-field performances have been far from ideal but what has hogged the limelight more often than not is their impatience with team selections and importantly, captaincy matters. Pakistan's captaincy choices have resembled musical chairs over the last two years with some inexplicable moves.
On Friday (October 24), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made another decision that is sure to grab headlines across the globe. The PCB has appointed Test captain Shan Masood as Consultant of International Cricket, a unique customised leadership position which is a first in the history of Pakistan cricket.
Technically, this appointment comes after former Director of Cricket Usman Wahla had been sacked following the 'no handshake' incident in the India-Pakistan match at the Asia Cup. Like most things in Pakistan cricket, the sacking was also temporary as Wahla was re-appointed but has been given a different set of duties with Masood set to handle the major responsibility in the new post.
According to Cricbuzz, the decision was made by PCB boss Mohsin Naqvi at a dinner meeting with Pakistan Prime Miniser Shehbaz Sharif who had visited the cricket teams of Pakistan and South Africa on Friday (October 24).
While the move is unique, it is also bizarre because it isn't common to say a captain, that too of just one format, getting a major leadership role within the PCB. If you are wondering what the job description for this role is, the Pakistan board had already given out their opinion about it while placing an advert for 'Director of Cricket' not too long ago.

"This is a multi-dimensional leadership role, emphasising the management of the Pakistan team, supervising international cricket operations. The incumbent's key functions is to plan, organise, execute and oversee international tours." read the ad posted by the PCB recently.
Pakistan, who drew the two-match Test series 1-1 at home to South Africa, next play a red-ball game only in March, which gives Masood ample time to grow into his new role.
