It was another nightmarish weekend for Manchester United and manager Ruben Amorim in the English Premier League as they went down 0-3 to arch-rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. A goal from Phil Foden followed by a brace from Erling Haaland pushed the Red Devils to their second defeat in four games this season. Manchester United find themselves at 14th currently and while these are early days in the season, the memories of an embarrassing 15th place finish last season will be fresh, as will the wounds.

To say that the pressure on Amorim is mounting significantly would be an understatement. While the fans are divided on his future, pundits and ex-players have constantly been asking for him to be sacked. The main matter of criticism has been regarding his stubborness to stick to his trademark 3-4-3 formation, instead of adapting to the style United has historically been known for. This, though, is a double-edged sword in terms of debate and it is hard to fault both parties for their opinions. However, with just 11 wins from 42 Premier League games, it is only a matter of time before the management at Old Trafford runs out of patience with Amorim. The Portugese man, however, could have a way out of this situation, if he actually feels like a change is what he needs and it could be back in Portugal itself.

In the Portugese league, Benfica have had a scratchy start to the season but despite that, they have three wins and a draw from their four games so far. The club finds itself at sixth spot with a game in hand but after two successive runners-up finishes in the league, word is that manager Bruno Lage might not get a lot more time from the management with his contract slated to end in June next year. According to Daily Mail journalist Chris Wheeler, Benfica's new club president Joao Noronha is reportedly a huge fan of Amorim and is said to be wanting the Portugese for the manager's role sooner than later. This means that should Amorim want an exit from United, he has the option to return to the familiar climes of back home for his next managerial stint.

With Noronha eager to have Amorim on board, it is now a matter of what the latter wants as his immediate future. The Portugese manager has often gone on record stating his determination to turn things around with United but clearly, time is running out for him with his current win-loss ratio at the club. If the Red Devils continue to endure losses in the coming weeks, the club will have to take a big call on Amorim's future, which could potentially make it the second mid-season managerial exit for the club. The bright spot for Amorim, though, is that he may well have a back-up if that does happen.
