Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan retained the ISL trophy by defeating Bengaluru FC 2-1 in a thrilling final match on Saturday. The home team came from behind to defeat BFC and clinch their fifth title. More importantly, they became the first team in the history of ISL to win the League Shield as well as the ISL title.
In a dramatic final, both teams were level at 1-1 in regulation time. Bagan's Alberto Rodriguez conceded a self-goal in the 49th minute to hand BFC the lead before Jason Cummings equalized from the spot in the 72nd minute. As the game entered extra time, Jamie McLaren scored the winner in the 96th minute. This is the team's second league trophy after adopting the name Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Previously, the team won three titles under the name ATK Mohun Bagan.
Alberto Rodriguez handed BFC the lead while trying to clear an incoming cross. Trying to avoid the worst, he ended up deflecting the ball past the goalkeeper. It was Ryan Williams who made the cross that led to the goal.
However, Bagan was able to find parity from the spot following a move down the left wing. A hand-ball was called when Jamie McLaren's cross for Jason Cummings inside the box was dealt by BFC defender Chinglensana Singh. Cummings, who took the kick, put the ball into the net, leaving Bengaluru goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu no chance. The goal that decided the game came when Jamie McLaren intercepted the ball and fired a right-footed went straight into the net.
