Rohit Sharma is 37. Virat Kohli is 36. But Indian cricket’s superstars still feel they are not done yet, though the game’s pundits think otherwise.
Well, here’s some motivation for the duo, all the way from Falkland Islands! At 62 years and 145 days, a certain Andrew Brownlee made history by becoming the oldest man to debut in international cricket. He entered the history books when he took the field for the Falkland Islands in a T20I match against Costa Rica on March 10, in Guacima, Costa Rica.
The earlier record was held by Osman Goker, who played his first international match – a T20I – for Turkey at 59 years and 181 days against Romania on August 29, 2019. However, Turkey were dismissed for 53, chasing 227 to win, and Goker, who came in at No.11, scored 1 not out and did not bowl.
Right-hand batter Brownlee has played three T20I matches so far, scoring six runs. He also bowls right-arm medium, but is yet to pick up a wicket in international cricket.
Brownlee also became the first male cricketer to make his international debut after 60.
In Tests, England’s James Southerton holds the record as the oldest debutant, having played his first Test match at 49 years and 119 days. In ODIs, the Netherlands' N.E. Clarke made his debut at 47 years and 240 days.
