Australia's World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins was expected to rake in the moolah at the IPL auction 2024, but Sunrisers Hyderabad's winning bid exceeded all expectations and predictions.

At Rs 20.5 crore, Cummins became the most expensive player in IPL history. Though the bidding started between the CSK and the Mumbai Indians, the latter backed out at Rs 4.8 crore. RCB jumped right in at Rs 5 crore, and a no-holds-barred bidding ensued between the Bengaluru-based team and the Chennai franchise.

But, SRH, who came in after RCB's Rs 7.8 crore bid, had the last laugh as they outbid RCB in an intense bidding war.

Cummins did not play IPL last year, and was with the KKR before that.

The most expensive player before Cummins was England's Sam Curran, who was bought by the Punjab Kings for Rs 18.5 crore in 2023.
