English Premier League side Everton have offered former Chelsea player and manager Frank Lampard the vacant manager post left behind by Rafa Benitez.

The club has decided to move for Lampard, according to BBC, after conducting interviews with Portuguese coach Vitor Pereira and caretaker Duncan Ferguson.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has said that Lampard has reportedly agreed to join and an announcement is imminent.

Benitez, who won the Champions League with rivals Liverpool in 2006, was relieved of his duties after winning only one of the club’s last 13 matches.

Lampard’s last managerial stint was with Chelsea, where he spent 18 months but was sacked exactly a year ago.

Despite the slump towards the end of his tenure, he is credited for building a foundation of youth players that his replacement Thomas Tuchel capitalised on to win the 2021 Champions League.

Another candidate for the Everton job was former England striker Wayne Rooney, who is currently coach of second-division side Derby County.

But the Manchester United legend declined the offer to coach his boyhood club as he wants to continue helping the struggling Derby side.

Everton are currently 16th in the Premier League, just six points above relegation zone. Fans of the club have been protesting for weeks over the poor running of the club. They were unhappy with Benitez’s football too, as they regularly booed his tactics and substitutions.
