Mary Kom posts workout video working outside comfort zone

She is part of the Sports Ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme

Women's Boxing Championships: Mary Kom in semis, assured of 7th medal

Indian boxing sensation Mary Kom, who was recently included in the Sports Ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), has just posted a video on Facebook of her training. The video shows her training with her personal trainer as she prepares for the Tokyo Olympics. Kom is banking on her experience to outwit her younger rivals.

“All progress takes place outside the comfort zone. “FitIndiaMovement #fitindia”, she said in the post, while also tagging Minister of State of youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju in the post. In the video, Kom can be seen shadow boxing while trying to run while being held back by a resistance band. She then goes on to throw, what appears to be a medicine ball as part of her training.

Mary Kom qualified for her second Olympic games after beating Irish Magno at the Asian Olympic qualifiers in Amman, Jordan. She had also beaten Tasmyn Benny in Amman. Both her opponents were 28 and 21 years respectively; considerably younger than the 37-year-old Olympic bronze medallist.

Nicknamed ‘Magnificent Mary’, she is the only female to become World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times, the only female boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer (male or female) to win eight World Championship medals. At 37 years old, the Tokyo Olympics would be her last Olympic participation and she had admitted that it would be an emotional moment as she steps into the ring in Tokyo.
