Kapil Dev suffers heart attack, undergoes angioplasty

He is in the ICU and is under close observation

Legendary Indian cricketer and World-Cup winning captain Kapil Dev suffered a heart attack and underwent an angioplasty at a hospital in New Delhi on Friday, as per reports. Many in the cricket fraternity took to social media to wish the former skipper a speedy recovery.

Kapil Dev led India to its maiden World Cup win in 1983 after ‘Kapil’s Devils’ defeated West Indies in the final at Lord’s by 43 runs.

The 61-year-old was admitted to the hospital late on Thursday after he complained of chest pain. It is said that he underwent an emergency coronary angioplasty and is in the ICU currently. He will be under close observation by a team of doctors.

A statement from Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in Okhla, New Delhi said that the cricketer is stable and expected to be discharged in a few days.  

Kapil Dev has played a total of 131 Test matches and 225 ODIs, amassing 9,000 international runs. He is the first cricketer to scalp 400 wickets in Test cricket. He has picked up 253 wickets in the ODI format.

Several of his peers and others in the cricket fraternity took to social media to convey their wishes to the legend.
