Mumbai club cricketer Karan Tiwari, who bowled in the Mumbai Ranji Trophy nets, killed himself at his house on Monday night, a PTI report quoting an official of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) said.

A friend of Tiwari said that the local cricketer was depressed over missing his selection for the 2020 IPL.

Tiwari was found hanging at his house in East Goregaon and an accidental death report was registered by the Mumbai Police at Kurar Station. The MCA official added that a probe was on.

The police said that Tiwari had called his best friend in Udaipur to tell him that he was going to kill himself. The friend informed the young cricketer’s sister, who lived in Mumbai. She then called their parents, but by then, Tiwari had hung himself. He was rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.

Police told Mid-Day that Tiwari was hoping to get through any of the eight IPL franchises. He went into depression after not getting a chance to play the T20 tournament. The 2020 IPL will be held in the UAE from September 19.

According to reports, Tiwari was called ‘Junior Steyn’ because of the identical bowling action of South African cricketer Dale Steyn. He is said to have had a some experience of bowling to IPL teams at Mumbai Indians’ home ground at the Wankhede Stadium, reports said.

Tiwari’s friend also reportedly said that the promising cricketer was in talks with people to get selected for a state team.

BCCI rules state that a player is eligible to contest for the IPL auction only if he has represented the state team in any age group category.

The police also said that he played for Souvenir Cricket Club and United Friends Sports Club and recently completed a Level 1 coaching course.
