Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar took to Instagram to lavish praise on Sourav Ganguly, lauding him as a leader and a tough opposition. Akhtar had posted a picture of him and the former India captain from their early playing days on Sunday.

“I welcomed any opposition, because i was determined to see the battle through. One of my toughest opposition was the man himself @souravganguly. Not only a tough opposition but a great captain having played under his leadership for @kkriders,” Akhtar captioned the photo.

India and Pakistan have enjoyed a fierce rivalry on the cricket field, with a contest between the two teams almost always advertised as the mother of all showdowns, especially World Cup matches between the sides. India has won all seven encounters with Pakistan in the ICC ODI World Cup.

Ganguly went on to become the most successful Indian captain till he retired in 2008. Under his leadership, the Indian team became a formidable side, thanks to Ganguly’s brand of fearless cricket, earning him and India respect from other cricketing nations.

The ex-captain and current BCCI president has represented India in 113 Tests and 311 ODIs, scoring 7,213 runs and 11,363 runs respectively.

Akhtar played under Ganguly’s leadership for Kolkata Knight Riders in the inaugural season of Indian Premier League.
