Tennis star Serena Williams will mark her return to the court for the first time since the coronavirus outbreak in the inaugural edition of the Top Seed Open in Lexington, Kentucky next month. It is one of the two new tournaments added to the WTA calendar this year.

The Women’s Tennis Association confirmed the news of Serena’s participation. The Top Seed Open will begin on August 10, along with the other new event at Prague, Czech Republic.

The 23-time grand slam champion will play her first match since February when Team USA defeated Latvia in the Fed Cup. Last month, she said that she would enter the US Open, which is scheduled to begin in New York on August 31.

Sloane Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion, has also confirmed that she would compete in the Lexington event.

It was only last week that the WTA added the two new international events to the 2020 provisional calendar, which now features 21 tournaments.

The WTA Tour was suspended since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will resume with the tournament in Palermo on August 3.
