Real Madrid clinched their 34th La Liga title with one game to spare, after registering a 2-1 win over Villareal on Thursday. Karim Benzema scored both goals for Madrid.

Benzema had to retake a penalty after Sergio Ramos tried to roll the ball to him but the Frenchman was inside the area and finished early. Benzema’s double helped him score his 21st goal in the season, only two behind Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine had said that this season winning the La Liga would be the club’s main objective.

“For me, this is one of the best days in my professional career. After lockdown and everything, it’s astonishing,” said Zidane. This is Madrid’s third La Liga title in 12 years.

“This is a tremendous feeling because what these players have done is incredible. I am lost for words because I am too emotional,” he was quoted as saying

Since the resumption of football amid the coronavirus pandemic, Madrid has won all 10 games it has played, conceding just four goals. The champions ended the dominance of Barcelona, and moved seven points clear of the second-placed former champions, who lost 1-2 against Osasuna at Camp Nou on Thursday.

Messi, who scored for Barca, has said that the team needs to be self-critical and things need to change across the entire club.

“We are a weak team who can be beaten with enough intensity and enthusiasm. We have lost a lot of points which we shouldn’t have.

“We are Barcelona, and we are obliged to win every game,” he said.

Real Madrid will play their last game of the season on Sunday against Leganes.
