Electing to bat, India struggled to 71 for three at lunch on the opening day of the third and final Test against South Africa in Ranchi on Saturday.

India lost opener Mayank Agarwal (10), Cheteshwar Pujara (0) and skipper Virat Kohli (12) with South Africa's pacers finally giving a good account of themselves.

Rohit Sharma (38) and vice captain Ajinkya Rahane (11) were at the crease when the break was taken.

Kagiso Rabada did the early damage, bowling a fuller length and generating swing. He drew Mayank Agarwal to edge to slip, where Dean Elgar took a low catch.

Cheteshwar Pujara lasted a mere nine balls and faced two leg-before wicket appeals. The second one was referred to the third umpire by captain Faf du Plessis after it was ruled not out. The third umpire overruled the decision and Pujara was ruled out. Rabada nearly celebrated a third time when he trapped Rohit Sharma in front. Though the umpire ruled in favour of Rabada, Sharma called for a review and the decision was overturned after replays showed an inside edge.

Anrich Nortje, playing his second test, trapped Virat Kohli in front for 12. Kohli reviewed the decision, but the third umpire concurred with the on-field decision.

India lead the series 2-0, having won the first two Tests in Visakhapatnam and Pune.
