In a tribute of sorts to the 19-year-old tennis champion, Canada embraced the hashtag, #SheTheNorth. Right after Bianca Andreescu trumped over Serena Williams to win the championship, social media users, reimagined “We the North” slogan used by the Toronto Raptors during their NBA championship-winning run.
“Congratulations @Bandreescu_!” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted at the champion. “You’ve made history and made a whole country very proud. #SheTheNorth.”
The hashtag shot to the top of Canada's trending topics on Twitter.
Toronto Mayor John Tory wrote, “Toronto is celebrating this victory and looking forward to a career filled with many more. #SheTheNorth,”
The Canadian basketball team wrote, “SHE THE CHAMP! Congrats, @Bandreescu_, #WeTheNorth x #SheTheNorth.”
