Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has signed a five-year deal with Inter Milan for a reported fee of £74 million (€80 million).
The statement released by Inter read, “The Belgian footballer, arriving from Manchester United on a permanent basis, has signed a contract with the Nerazzurri until 30 June 2024."
Inter announced the signing after a day of speculation from fans, who were watching the player’s arrival in Milan with anticipation of such a trade. The club posted a video on Twitter, where Lukaku, wearing an Inter shirt, says “Inter is not for everyone. And that is why I am here.”
Manchester United’s official handle later tweeted that @RomeluLukaku9 departs for Italy with our thanks and best wishes for the future. Lukaku had played for Manchester United since July of 2017, a period in which he scored 42 goals. He is the ninth highest-scoring
It is the third most expensive signing for a series-A club after that of Cristiano Ronaldo (£99.2m) and Gonzalo Higuain (£75.3m), who went to Juventus.
Early reports suggest that Manchester United were looking to sign Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic. However, with the transfer window closing soon, this news was deemed unlikely, with Man Utd likely opting not to replace Lukaku.
Lukaku is Inter’s costlest signing. The club has also brought on Nicolo Barella, Matteo Politano, Diego Godin, Stefano Sensi, Valentino Lazaro, Lucien Agoume and Eddie Salcedo.
The club is reportedly looking to sign on the Bosnian Edin Džeko after the Lukaku purchase.
