World Champions England were bundled out for 85 before lunch at 23.4 overs on the first day of the one-off Test against Ireland on Wednesday as Tim Murtagh destroyed the hosts' batting order.

This is England's lowest score in a home Test innings since they were dismissed for 77 by Australia at Lord's in 1997.

England's Joe Root won the toss and opted to bat first. However, the hosts, who were won their maiden World Cup title just 10 days ago at the same ground, were in for a rude shock as the day progressed. Joe Denly top-scored for England with 23 and eight batsmen failed to get runs in double digits. Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes were out for 0.

Tim Murtagh ripped through the England order to claim five for 13 in nine overs. The 37-year-old, who plays county cricket for Middlesex, became the first Ireland bowler to take five wickets in a Test innings. He snapped up the wickets of Rory Burns, Jason Roy, Bairstow, Ali and Woakes.

Mark Adair also took the crucial wickets of captain Root, Denly and Olly Stone.

This is the fourth time England has been bowled out in a session in a year with the previous dismissals being at Dakar, Auckland and Trent Bridge.

The four-day Test match was supposed to serve as an opportunity for England to prepare ahead of the Ashes, which will start next week.
