Lionel Messi's double ended Manchester United's hopes for a comeback at Camp Nou as Barcelona cruised into the semifinals of the Champions League with a 3-0 win in the second leg match on Tuesday.

Barcelona sealed a 4-0 aggregate win and will clash with either Porto or Liverpool in the last four.

After a good start, United made a few errors that made sure that there was very little chance of repeating the results of the game against Paris Saint Germain. Messi took a misplaced pass from Ashley Young and curled into the bottom corner in the 16th minute past David de Gea to give Barcelona its first boost before scoring another one four minutes later.

Messi now has 110 Champions League goals, 16 less than Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo.

Philippe Coutinho sealed the win to take Barca to a 4-0 aggregate win as the ball curled into the top corner in the 61st minute.

Barcelona had, in the first leg of the quarterfinals, defeated United 1-0 at Old Trafford after Luke Shaw scored an own goal.

United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his side needs a huge overhaul in order to return to Europe's elite.

“You know that at this level you cannot slip up and make mistakes and you have to take your chances when you get them.” United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said. “We didn't capitalise on our great start, then they have their first two shots on target, they get two goals then it's game over.”

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde, in the meantime, heaped praise on the talismanic Messi and said that his side was relieved to have entered the semifinals of the Champions League.

“Messi always gets us out of trouble and we're not going to apologise for having him,” Valverde said. “He is always capable of scoring but he also drives the team's attack.”

Barcelona have made it to the semifinals for the first time in four years. They will face the winner of the match between Liverpool and Porto. Liverpool carry a 2-0 lead from the first leg at Anfield.
