Naomi Osaka of Japan stormed into the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after her 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova on Monday.

The 2018 US Open champion will face Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who was a quarterfinalist at Melbourne Park last year, Svitolina defeated Madison Keys of the US 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.

After the match, Osaka said that Sevastova played really well, but she didn't want to give up. She mentioned that after watching Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Roger Federer the previous night, she wanted to do well, too.

If the quarterfinal match goes in her favour, Osaka is likely to face Serena Williams, whom she beat in the final of the 2018 US Open to clinch the title.

Serena, meanwhile, beat world number one Simona Halep 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to enter the last eight stage as she inched closer to Margaret Court's record of 24 grand slam.

The 23-time grand slam champion, who has been in great form so far, wrapped the first set in under 20 minutes as the world number one struggled to find her feet. However, Halep fought back in the second set to level the match. Serena got a crucial break in the seventh game in the third set to cement her position in the next stage.

Serena will now meet Czech Karolina Pliskova, who pummelled Garbine Muguruza 6-3 6-1 earlier today.
