Former world number one Maria Sharapova crashed out of the US Open after losing her fourth round match against Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.

Navarro, who celebrated her 30 birthday on Monday, gifted herself a sweet surprise by defeating the 2006 champion 6-4, 6-3.

Sharapova dropped serve six times and hit 38 unforced errors during her match against Navarro, who was a quarterfinalist in the 2013 US Open. Eighteen of Sharapova's unforced errors came in the first set. She retrieved a break in the second set but dropped serve again in the fifth and ninth game as Navarro sealed the match with a backhand.

The Russian has been struggling to find her feet in the grand slams since her return from a 15-month doping ban. Sharapova last won a grand slam at the 2014 French Open.

Navarro will now face Madison Keys, who beat Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova, for a place in the semifinal.
