Following the success of Kratos slashing his way through multiple mythologies, PlayStation opened pre-orders for God of War Laufey on September 29 at ten this morning.
Santa Monica Studio also announced the game’s Digital Deluxe Edition and introduced Faye’s new weapon, the Serpent Bow. The game is scheduled to launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027.
So far, what we know is that Laufey will distinguish itself from the previous God of War titles in a significant manner. God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök were all about Kratos and "boy". But this title shifts the spotlight to Faye, whose character has largely been explored through dialogue, flashbacks and bits of lore and mythology.
As per the latest gameplay video, the Serpent Bow seems to be front and centre to Faye’s combat mechanics. The enchanted weapon can switch rapidly from a dormant form to a ready-to-fire bow, allowing her to combine ranged attacks with close-quarters strikes.
Its full-aim mode adds precision and draw distance, and it seems to be a pretty decent upgrade on Atreus’s bow mechanics in God of War Ragnarök.
The rest will depend on how players improvise once the game is out. The pre-order bonus now includes the Last Wish armour set, the Phranque Golden Leaves appearance, and an in-game resource pack.
The Digital Deluxe Edition adds the Dark Alchemy armour set, blade, bow scales and catalyst, alongside a mini artbook, soundtrack and resource pack.
There is a footnote, though: Santa Monica Studio notes that the listed in-game items unlock through story progression, while physical Standard Edition bonuses require a download code, an internet connection and a PlayStation account. We are just going to leave it at that.
God of War Laufey will be Santa Monica Studio’s third big-ticket outing and, so far, it looks like it brings a new combat system and a story that now explores the afterlife of the gods. A full-circle moment for OG God of War fans, given how Kratos is a frequent flyer to the Underworld in almost every single game since 2005.
