Meta Platforms has announced a major overhaul to the way video content is shared on Facebook, confirming that all newly uploaded videos will soon be categorised as Reels - regardless of length, format, or orientation.

The move is aimed at streamlining video publishing and discovery on the platform, reflecting Meta’s ongoing efforts to unify its video ecosystem by bringing all content—from short-form clips to longer videos—under the Reels format.

Livestreams, however, will remain separate, with their own upload flow. While live videos may still appear within the Reels feed, they won’t be officially classified as Reels.

In a statement, Meta explained: “In the coming months, all videos on Facebook will be shared as Reels, eliminating the need to choose between uploading a video or Reel. Reels on Facebook will also not have any length or format restrictions.”

With this change, users will no longer need to select a specific video format when posting. Any video attached to a post will be automatically treated as a Reel. The platform’s ‘Video’ tab will also be renamed the ‘Reels’ tab as part of the redesign.

Previously, users followed different publishing flows depending on whether they were sharing a Feed video or a Reel. Meta now intends to merge these workflows, offering a single publishing process equipped with expanded creative tools.

“We’re bringing these experiences together with a simplified publishing flow that gives you access to even more creative tools,” the company stated.

Users will also be prompted to confirm or update their audience settings — especially if there are differences between visibility for their feed posts and Reels.

From an analytics perspective, Meta confirmed that video and Reels metrics will be combined. Users will continue to access crucial insights such as 3-second and 1-minute views. Historical performance data for videos and Reels will remain available through Meta Business Suite until the end of the year. However, metrics for future uploads will now be grouped under Reels.

Meta said the global rollout of these updates will take place progressively over the coming months and will apply to both personal profiles and Pages.
