Grand Theft Auto VI has an entire location designed in India

Here’s what the country has to do with building Rockstars’ most ambitious title yet

GTA 6

One of the most anticipated events in the gaming world is the release of Rockstar's latest addition to its Grand Theft Auto Franchise - Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6). With players around the world eagerly waiting for its release, the company had decided to outsource a large chunk of its development to various countries, including India.

In fact, Rockstar India, based in Bengaluru, has the largest number of developers (~1615) making it the single largest contributor among global offices. Although Rockstar India had previously contributed to other popular titles of the company such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5, the previous instalment of the series, this time around the Indian team is not just supporting, but actively leading in the process of development and world building.

Rockstar India has the responsibility of leading the creation of Vice Beach, one of the key locations in the game, which is expected to have the biggest and most detailed map of any Rockstar Game, rumoured to be at 1.5 to 2 times the size of the GTA 5 map. Leaks also talk of the next gen level of detail in the game, paving a path for the future of gaming.

Rockstar India, formally set up in 2016, became more well known after Rockstar acquired Dhruva Interactive, India’s oldest game developer in 2019. Since then, the size and prominence has grown, with it now playing a key role in the development of GTA 6.

This also reflects a new broader approach in Rockstar’s strategy for developing games, with it deciding to spread the development across several regions rather than mostly concentrating it in Rockstar North.
