US-based artificial intelligence (AI) firm OpenAI has introduced a new tool in ChatGPT, primarily to conduct in-depth research and to complete complex tasks. Apparently launched to counter China’s DeepSeek AI tool, OpenAI claims the new tool can work at the level of a research analyst.
Called ‘Deep research’, the new ChatGPT tool can “accomplish in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours,” OpenAI said. “You give it a prompt, and ChatGPT will find, analyze, and synthesize hundreds of online sources to create a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst,” the firm said in a statement.
OpenAI said the tool has been primarily designed for individuals doing intensive research work, especially in areas like finance, science, policy, and engineering. It added the responses are clearly documented with citations and allows to “offload time-intensive search with just one query”.

“Deep research may take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to complete its work, taking the time needed to dive deep into the web. The final output arrives as a report within the chat – in the next few weeks, we will also be adding embedded images, data visualizations, and other analytic outputs in these reports for additional clarity and context,” the firm said.
OpenAI said the new tool achieved an accuracy of 26.6% on Humanity’s last exam (An examination that tests AI across a broad range of subjects on expert-level questions). The company said the new tool is currently available for its ‘Pro’ users and will be soon available for ‘Plus’ and ‘Team’ users. Currently, pro users will be able to raise 100 queries in deep research. Users can currently only access deep research on ChatGPT web and will be available on mobile and desktop apps in a month.
