Amid renewed tensions in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the US will "probably" strike Iran hard tonight.
Trump also threatened that the US might invade Kharg Island and even attack civilian infrastructure, including electricity, water and desalination plants. "Maybe we'll take over Kharg Island. We may take over Kharg Island. There's not a thing they could do about it," Trump said.
"We hit them very hard last night. Very, very hard. We'll probably hit them hard again tonight. I'll give them a little warning. We're going to hit them hard tonight," Trump said while addressing media during a meeting with Ukrainain President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a NATO summit in Ankara.
This comes after Iran reportedly attacked vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said on Wednesday it had targeted US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait after American forces struck Iranian targets in response to attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, reports Reuters.
Trump also stated that Washington does not want Tehran to acquire a nuclear weapon. "I'm not happy with what the Iranians are doing, and this doesn't concern regime change, but we don't want them to get a nuclear weapon," he said.
"The Iranian strikes are a violation of the temporary agreement and the Iranians are wrong to do so. Our agreement with Iran stipulates that it must halt the nuclear program, or we will do so ourselves," he said.
This comes hours after Trump declared that the US has withdrawn from the June 17 MoU that brought an end to the war with Iran. However, he said there is room for more talks.
