US President Donald Trump is planning to meet top national security officials to discuss Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange of US removal of blockade on Iranian ports.
This comes as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Monday that the United States failed to achieve any of its objectives in the war. He also said that Washington has been seeking negotiations with Tehran. The remarks came as Trump urged Iran to phone when it wants a deal.
"It is clear that Iran has stood up to the world’s greatest superpower, and they have not achieved even one of their goals. This is why they have requested negotiations, which we are currently considering it," Araghchi told Russian media, according to his Telegram channel.
During their meeting in St Petersburg, Putin assured Araghchi that Russia is ready to do everything in its power to ensure peace in the Middle East. He also lauded the Iranian people for fighting "bravely and heroically" for their sovereignty.
"We really hope that, based on the courage and desire for independence, the Iranian people, under the guidance of the new leader, will weather this difficult period of trials and peace will come," Putin said.
Araghchi also blamed the excessive demands and incorrect approaches of Washington for failed peace talks.
