Ro-Ro vehicle carrier Grande Svezia on Saturday discharged a record volume of cargo when it berthed at the OCT-2 berth of the Mumbai Port's Indira Container Terminal Private Limited (ICTPL).

In just its second voyage since it was delivered to Grimaldi Group, a global Ro-Ro leader, the Korean-flagged vessel discharged 2,196 cargo units (rolling freight and spares), amounting to over 15,000 metric tonnes, at the port.

The Grande Svezia was operated by Oasis Shipping Private Limited, on behalf of Grimaldi, a Maritime Gateway report said.

This record operation is a huge boost for cargo handling at the Mumbai Port, establishing new benchmarks for Ro-Ro cargo operations, in particular, and India's maritime port prowess, in general.

This comes just months after Grimaldi inducted the Grande Svezia into its fleet—the second in a series of ten next-generation Pure Car & Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels under construction at the China Merchants Heavy Industries (Jiangsu).

Designed to transport both electric and combustion engine vehicles, the Grande Svezia is equipped with an array of advanced green technologies, such as zero emissions during port calls, solar power, as well as smart systems for ventilation and climate control, among others.

Notably, the Mumbai Port falls within Grimaldi's Europe-Asia network, which leads to its vessels calling at the port about once a month. These vessels typically ship new vehicles, such as cars, buses, and trucks.

India was included in this network back in February 2025, at which point the company had said that a "total of seven sister car carrier vessels" would be deployed on the new service to "to meet the growing demand for high-quality maritime transport on this route".

"As part of its continuous expansion in the Asian market, the Grimaldi Group is also considering further strengthening its presence in India by adding calls at other strategic ports in the country," the statement added.
