Free drugs, diagnostics and emergency care at all government hospitals. That will become a reality with the implementation of the National Health Policy 2017, approved by the Union cabinet.
On paper, the policy, which proposes to raise public health expenditure to 2.5 per cent of GDP in a time-bound manner, stands out for its shift from diseases and treatment, to good health and well-being as the main objective. It is expected to be achieved through a preventive and promotive health care orientation. Above all, it can be achieved without anyone having to face financial hardship as a consequence.
It seeks to promote quality of care. The main focus is on emerging diseases and investment in promotive and preventive healthcare.
The primary health care package will include geriatric health care, palliative care and rehabilitative care services. The secondary care will be provided at the district level.
The policy will replace the now archaic policy of 2002.
