Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has alleged that his residence in Kolkata was attacked by “BJP goons” in the early hours of Saturday.
In a post on X, Banerjee, an MP from Diamond Harbour, said the attack took place around 2 am, hours after he released a video purportedly showing unidentified individuals conducting a recce of his residence.
According to reports, BJP and TMC supporters earlier in the day during Banerjee's birthday celebrations.
“After I released the recce video this morning, my house was attacked just now, at 2 AM by BJP goons, right under the watch of the Kolkata police,” he said in a video shared on X.
The footage shared by the MP showed a group of people tearing down banners and posters bearing his name. Banerjee alleged that some of the attackers were carrying revolvers and had a “premeditated intent to kill him”.
The TMC leader also criticised the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court, accusing them of remaining “mute spectators” as such incidents unfold in the state.
Banerjee claimed that the latest incident was part of a series of attacks targeting him over the past six months, but alleged that neither the police nor the judiciary had intervened.
“Hooligans are running riot across the state because the judiciary continues to turn a blind eye. If this is what can happen to an elected Member of Parliament, imagine the plight of the common man in West Bengal,” he said in his post.
On Friday, Banerjee had alleged that unidentified individuals had been conducting a recce of his residence for the past two days. He claimed that when confronted, the individuals identified themselves as police personnel.
Questioning the alleged surveillance, the MP asked: “Why is the State Police allegedly spying on and snooping around the office and residence of an elected Member of Parliament? Who authorised this surveillance and for what purpose?”
He also demanded a comprehensive investigation to establish who had ordered the alleged operation and determine its motive.
BJP calls it ‘drama’
The BJP, meanwhile, dismissed Banerjee's allegations and accused the TMC MP of staging a “drama”.
“The first time we are seeing a birthday celebration of a leader being celebrated on a footpath! If anyone creates a nuisance at night, then protest is expected," West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh said.
"Who has the time to kill Abhishek Banerjee? There is nothing left, so attempts are being made to mislead people by using emotional rhetoric,” he added.
