Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday urged people to join a march being organised by the INDIA bloc from Connaught Place to Ramlila Maidan on November 1, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in voter lists.
The Opposition bloc has planned a mega rally at Ramlila Maidan over the 'vote chori' issue and alleged discrepancies in the electoral rolls.
In a post on X, Gandhi said the march would begin at the Minto Road junction near Connaught Place at 12 noon on Sunday. It would proceed towards Ajmeri Gate before concluding at Ramlila Maidan.
It remains unclear whether the Delhi Police will grant permission for the march. Top police sources told news agency ANI that no application had been submitted seeking permission for a march from Connaught Place.
However, they said Members of Parliament and political leaders were free to travel in their private vehicles to the Constitution Club, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence or any other location of their choice.
On Thursday, Gandhi had urged people to join the Opposition INDIA bloc's 'Chalo Dilli' march, asking them not to worry about the police or their "lathis". He also said the BJP "will not have the guts to try any of their antics".
Meanwhile, police have made extensive security arrangements at Ramlila Maidan, dividing the sprawling ground into 14 zones and installing hundreds of high-definition cameras.
Separately, the INDIA bloc will hold a public impeachment-style programme against Gyanesh Kumar at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi on Saturday.
The programme was originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to rain in the national capital.
Citing sources, news agency PTI reported that former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar would chair the INDIA bloc's 'public impeachment' programme against Gyanesh Kumar. Kharge is expected to move the 'motion' seeking his impeachment, while Gandhi will deliver the concluding remarks before the motion is put to a vote.
