The Opposition INDIA bloc is set to hold a public impeachment-style programme against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi on Saturday.
The programme was originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to rain in the national capital. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the decision to reschedule the event was taken by consensus to avoid inconvenience to senior leaders.
"By consensus we have decided to postpone today's programme to tomorrow because of rain. We felt that it would be uncomfortable for seniors to sit in the rain, and we would do the exact same programme tomorrow," Gandhi said at a joint press conference with INDIA bloc leaders outside Kharge's residence at 10, Rajaji Marg.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X that, due to incessant rain, the "public impeachment" programme against Gyanesh Kumar, organised by the INDIA bloc, had been rescheduled to October 31 at 2.30 pm.
"The countdown to the exit of Gyanesh Kumar, who has so blatantly and brazenly subverted and sabotaged the Constitution of India on the instructions of the PM-HM duo, is accelerating," Ramesh said.
Citing sources, PTI reported that former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar would chair the INDIA bloc's "public impeachment" programme against Gyanesh Kumar. While Kharge is expected to move the 'motion' seeking his impeachment, Gandhi will deliver the concluding remarks before the 'motion' is put to a vote.
Besides Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, one representative from each participating party is likely to address the gathering.
The Congress-led bloc plans to project the mock impeachment programme against Gyanesh Kumar as a precursor to its mega rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, organised to protest against the revision of electoral rolls and alleged electoral malpractices.
At the press conference, Gandhi invited political parties, civil society members, journalists and other citizens to participate in the rally.
"The day after, we have a march to Ramlila Maidan. All the opposition, everybody who wants to come: political, non-political, social, service people, civil society people, journalists. Both the programs are about the demolition of Indian democracy by Narendra Modi, by Amit Shah, by Gyanesh Kumar and his crew in the Election Commission," he said.
Several INDIA bloc leaders, including Kharge, Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh and Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal, along with Trinamool Congress leaders Derek O'Brien and Mahua Moitra, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant, CPI(M) leader John Brittas, CPI leader P. Sandosh Kumar, RJD leader Sanjay Yadav and RSP leader N.K. Premachandran, among others, attended a meeting to discuss preparations for the INDIA bloc's protest.
