Multiple voter identity cards were seen floating in the water along the banks of the Narmada River in a viral video from Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone district.

Preliminary reports indicate that around 343 voter IDs belonging to Indore’s Rau assembly constituency were found in the river. The addresses listed on the voter IDs included Tilak Nagar, Aastha Palace and Akash Nagar. The police reported that residents found the cards during a cleanliness drive along the riverbank and informed the administration.

The voter IDs were found in Mandleshwar, which is represented by BJP MLA Rajkumar Mev. The area comes under the Khargone Lok Sabha constituency, represented by BJP MP Gajendra Singh Patel.

Following the incident, the Congress has demanded an FIR and an unbiased investigation into the incident. The issue comes amid nationwide protests demanding the resignation of Election Commissioner of India Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

“The BJP's conspiracies involved in vote theft are now coming to light one by one! How did voter ID cards from Indore reach Maheshwar on such a massive scale? Who dumped them there and why? Is some big game being played with the rights of voters?” The MP Congress questioned on X.

Mandleshwar Sub-Divisional Officer of Police Shweta Shukla said the revenue team had seized the cards and that the police station in charge has been directed to investigate the matter.

The Rau constituency seat is currently held by the BJP MLA Madhu Verma after defeating former Congress MLA Jitu Patwari by a margin of 35,522 votes. The voter turnout was 76.81 per cent.

According to a TOI report, the constituency has around 90,000 SC/ST voters, along with 30,000 Muslims, 20,000 Marathi, 18,000 Brahmin, and around 22,000 Thakur/Rajput voters. According to the Election Commission website, it has more than 3,56,000 electors and is a general category seat.

Rau is a Nagar Panchayat city in the Indore district with a 30 per cent rural population. It is a male-dominated constituency with a literacy rate of 83.59 per cent.

Similar discoveries have been reported in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh in October 2025, where hundreds of voter ID cards were found inside Raja Talab pond. The opposition claimed the discovery was evidence of the ruling party’s alleged vote theft.
