Akhilesh Yadav is likely to project the results as a sign of his party’s growing challenge to BJP
The Bharatiya Janata Party won six of the eleven Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats, while the Samajwadi Party secured four seats and led in another during the recent graduates and teachers constituency elections. The high stakes contest provided an early glimpse into the political landscape ahead of the 2027 assembly elections, though counting controversies emerged in certain regions like Gorakhpur and Varanasi. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won six of the 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) put up a strong performance, winning four seats and leading in another, according to the latest available figures.
The BJP won the Agra Graduates’ constituency, the Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’ constituency, the Lucknow Teachers’ constituency, both the Meerut Teachers’ and Graduates’ constituencies, and the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ seat.
The SP secured the Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates’ constituency and the Lucknow Graduates’ seat, along with the Varanasi and Agra-Aligarh Teachers’ constituencies. The party was also leading in the Varanasi Graduates’ constituency.
The Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ constituency also witnessed controversy over the counting process. Independent candidate Rajiv Yadav, who lost to the BJP’s Dhruv Tripathi by a margin of 307 votes, alleged voter manipulation and said he would approach the Election Commission and the courts to challenge the result.
Yadav demanded a forensic examination of the 1,612 votes counted in the fourth round, alleging irregularities during the counting process. The allegations have not been independently established.
Voting was held on Friday for 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC) seats, comprising five graduates’ and six teachers’ constituencies. The stakes were high for both the BJP and the SP, with the results offering an early indication of the political landscape ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
While the BJP retained most of its key seats, the SP increased its tally from three to five, giving party chief Akhilesh Yadav an opportunity to project the results as a sign of the party’s growing challenge to the Yogi Adityanath-led government.
In a post on X, he claimed that the outcome had dealt a blow to the ruling party, declaring that the MLC elections had “packed up the BJP’s bags and baggage”.
Akhilesh Yadav also accused the BJP of attempting electoral malpractice and alleged administrative manipulation in Gorakhpur and Varanasi.
