Vedanta Group Founder and chairman Anil Agarwal met Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at the state secretariat, Nabanna, on Wednesday.
Agarwal was in the city for an event organised by an industry body. Vedanta Group plans to set up a plant in Asansol in West Bardhaman district, the details of which are still not clear. The plant is expected to create 10,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
“I welcomed him (Anil Agarwal) and committed that the West Bengal government will support him in every way,” said Adhikari after the meeting.
Agarwal said that his group is present in seven states in the country while he is based in London.
“He mentioned he did not come to West Bengal because of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Now that the BJP government has come, I want to invest in West Bengal he said,” added the CM.
Meanwhile, Adhikari said the much-awaited industrial policy is being prepared and will be unveiled on November 5 ahead of Kali Puja and Diwali. The CM said a group of ministers took opinions from all stakeholders, after which an industrial policy was placed before the cabinet. “After that too, ministers outside the group of ministers had some suggestions. Taking those into account too, the industrial policy has been finalised,” explained the CM.
The West Bengal government held a meeting with all industry stakeholders, including industry bodies and prominent industrialists, on August 11 in Nabanna. The industrial policy was to be placed in the same month but was deferred as more work was required to draft the policy. The state did not have an industrial policy since 2025, after the erstwhile TMC government did away with existing incentives to give a boost to industry. The much-awaited industrial policy, which outlines finer details, will pave the way for industrialists to explore business opportunities in the state.
