The BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) have delivered a political setback to the ruling Congress in Karnataka by winning all four Legislative Council seats from teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies, leaving the Congress without a single victory.

The results are a blow to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s leadership and provide fresh ammunition to the Opposition as it prepares for the 2028 assembly elections. However, the outcome of these elections, which involve specialised electorates, does not necessarily reflect the mood of the state’s general electorate.

Under their electoral arrangement, the BJP contested three constituencies while the JD(S) fielded its candidate in Bengaluru Teachers’ constituency. The alliance won all four seats, demonstrating the potential electoral advantage of avoiding a contest between the two parties.

With incumbent candidate Shashil G. Namoshi winning, the BJP retained North-East Teachers’ seat. West Graduates’ and South-East Graduates’ constituencies were won by BJP candidates S.V. Sankanur and K.M. Suresh, while JD(S) candidate A.P. Ranganath defeated Puttanna of the Congress in Bengaluru Teachers’ constituency.

The Bengaluru result was particularly significant. Ranganath defeated sitting Congress MLC Puttanna by 908 votes, securing 10,810 votes against his rival’s 9,902.

The result reverses the outcome of the 2024 by-election, when Puttanna, who had switched from the JD(S) to the Congress, defeated Ranganath. The latest contest also tested whether BJP voters would transfer their support to a JD(S) candidate under the alliance arrangement.

The defeat raises questions about Congress’s organisational strength and engagement with teachers and graduates. The results also put the spotlight on candidate selection and the party’s ability to translate its position in government into electoral support among professional groups.

The Opposition is projecting the sweep as evidence that BJP-JD(S) coordination can challenge the Congress beyond individual constituencies. The results give both parties a morale boost as they prepare for the next assembly polls.

BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra said, “BJP-NDA Sweep in All Four Karnataka Legislative Council Constituencies; Voters Deliver a Strong Political Message. Congress is not facing Vote Chori, but a Trust Chori! “ after the election .

The result cannot be interpreted as a statewide rejection of the Congress government. Nor does the defeat threaten the government’s immediate stability. Its principal significance is political: the Opposition has secured a clean sweep, while the ruling party faces renewed pressure to examine its electoral strategy and strengthen its grassroots organisation.

The challenge for the BJP and JD(S) will be to sustain their coordination across Karnataka. For the Congress, the results serve as a warning.
