Using terrorism as an "instrument of statecraft" is unacceptable, and it can never be justified or rationalised, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Sunday. Terrorism remains a threat to global peace because "not all states really display zero tolerance", he pointed out.
Despite history showing the dangers of using terrorism to meet political goals, "some still allow political calculations to take precedence", Jaishankar said without naming any country. The minister was speaking at an event held here to mark the 75th anniversary of Chinmaya Mission.
"Terrorism is another deadly threat to peace. Its usage as an instrument of statecraft is simply unacceptable. It can never be justified. It can never be rationalised. Yet, it continues because not all states really display zero tolerance. Despite history holding so many lessons, some still allow political calculations to take precedence," Jaishankar was quoted as saying by PTI.
The world must, therefore, develop a sharper awareness of this common threat, and it must come together with a stronger resolve to counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, he said.
"Let us consider the indivisibility of peace. Now, war anywhere threatens peace everywhere," the Union minister said.
He also spoke about the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the West Asia region, asserting that India expresses global sentiment when it says that dialogue and diplomacy are the only solutions. He reportedly underlined the importance of peace, especially amid ongoing conflicts in the world.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India will continue to support every meaningful effort to bring peace to Ukraine and West Asia. "Be it Ukraine or West Asia, India will continue to support every meaningful effort towards peace," he said during an official tour of Poland.
