Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital's medical officer was suspended for allegedly consuming alcohol in the hospital's post-mortem room. The action was taken by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in Maharashtra after a video of the drinking session went viral.

Following the incident on Thursday night, Dr Vaibhav Avinash Mhaske was suspended with immediate effect on Friday pending a departmental inquiry.

Reportedly, the doctor was drinking inside the morgue while people waited outside the hospital through the night to collect a death certificate. When someone looked inside the room, they reportedly found the doctor drunk on duty.

The video of the doctor lying down on the hospital bed went viral on social media. The clip shows a table littered with food and a bottle.

Additional Commissioner Kuldeep Jangam took cognisance of the matter and first issued a notice to the doctor and the staff concerned, asking for a written explanation by evening.

Hospital administration said the doctor’s conduct directly violated Maharashtra Civil Services rules. A charge sheet will be issued within 15 days, following which the departmental inquiry will be completed.

Mhaske is barred from leaving the Pimpri headquarters during the suspension.
