Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was reportedly attacked with a knife by a civic volunteer on Tuesday evening while leaving her Kalighat residence to attend a Durga Puja inauguration. The incident has raised security concerns within the Mamata faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), particularly given her Z-plus security cover.

TMC MP Dola Sen, representing the Mamata faction, has lodged a complaint at the Kalighat police station, alleging that the accused is a drug addict and an alcoholic. Sen has urged the police to take appropriate legal action under Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

“She was hurling abuses and, in an intoxicated state, attempted to approach Smt. Mamata Banerjee aggressively. She even lay down on the road in an attempt to harm the Hon’ble eighth Chief Minister of West Bengal,” stated the complaint filed by Dola Sen.

According to the complaint, the woman was identified as Tannistha Saha. However, police identified her as Anusua Saha, a 38-year-old civic volunteer from the New Alipore area. The police acknowledged the complaint after personnel on duty detained the accused. Officials said that further necessary action was being taken in accordance with the law.

“It is concerning that someone like the attacker could approach the gates of the residence of a Z plus category security protectee, raising questions about a larger conspiracy,” adds Sen in her complaint.

Following the alleged attack, Banerjee’s supporters were seen confronting the accused amid the crowd. Leaders of the Mamata faction subsequently took to social media to raise concerns over the security arrangements for the former chief minister.
