The Delhi Police have registered a total of 20 FIRs in connection with Saturday's Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The FIRs include charges related to the assault on police personnel and the obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their duties, among other offences, officials said on Sunday. Featuring among the 20 is the FIR registered against four Hindu Raksha Dal activists who were arrested for allegedly assaulting students and manhandling women during the protest, they said.
More than 7,000 people, including several opposition leaders and activists, were detained as police deployed over 30,000 personnel to prevent protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar. The police had detained protesters from several locations, including Akashvani Bhawan, Imtiaz Khan Marg, the Hanuman Temple, and Kerala House, amid heavy barricading and restrictions across central Delhi. CJP convener Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were detained at Delhi airport on their arrival from Mumbai.
Several opposition leaders, including former Chief Ministers Arvind Kejriwal (AAP), Mamata Banerjee (TMC), Pinarayi Vijayan (CPI-M), and Manik Sarkar (CPI-M), were detained from multiple locations across the capital as they tried to join the protest called by the CJP.
Several incidents of stone-pelting were reported during the demonstrations, leaving more than 15 police personnel injured, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Anant Mittal, who sustained a hand injury while detaining protesters, including AISA President Neha Bora and her supporters, near Safdarjung flyover.
Around 1:00 pm, scores of protesters hurled stones at security personnel near Akashvani Bhawan on Imtiaz Khan Marg after jumping barricades, injuring two police personnel. The protesters were quickly detained by security personnel.
In the evening, a similar incident happened near the Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place, where some protesters threw stones at security personnel. A total of seven personnel sustained injuries during the detention of protesters.
The police also picked up a few protesters who managed to reach Jantar Mantar. The massive security arrangements by the Delhi Police thwarted attempts by protesters to reach Jantar Mantar.
