BJP's Rajya Sabha candidate from Uttarakhand, Dinesh Arya, was elected unopposed on Friday. Meanwhile, the party managed to send eight representatives to the Upper House from Uttar Pradesh, while the remaining two went to the Samajwadi Party (SP).
The BJP has nominated Dharampal Singh, the party's backward class front president Prakash Pal, Shruti Gangwar, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Priyanka Rawat, Radhakant Ojha, Gopi Krishna Pandey, and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan for the Rajya Sabha. The selections were made after factoring in caste arithmetic, some reports said. The list included two women alongside representatives from the OBC, Dalit, Brahmin, and Thakur communities, Hindi news reports said.
Senior leader Ram Gopal Yadav and Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani were the SP nominees. There was speculation that the SP would field a third candidate for the tenth seat. However, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav put an end to these speculations, saying, "Now our focus is not on three, but on 403."
In Uttarakhand, Dinesh Arya was chosen to represent the seat that was held by his party colleague Naresh Bansal, whose six-year term is expiring on November 25. Hailing from Haldwani in the Nainital district, Arya has long been associated with the BJP and is considered a close associate of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
He served as the Nainital district president from 2007 to 2010 and was later appointed national secretary of the BJP's Scheduled Caste Morcha.
Currently, he holds the rank of Minister of State and serves as the Vice-Chairman of the state-level Drinking Water Monitoring Council. He has been a contender for a party ticket in the last two assembly elections.
