While October is expected to bring a nip in the air in North India, summer-like heat refuses to leave. Delhi is expected to record a maximum temperature of around 36°C on Tuesday (October 6), while the mercury could touch 40°C in Rajasthan’s Pilani, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In Kashmir, too, where autumn is marked by the landscape turning burnt orange, temperatures in several places remain well over 30°C. Srinagar is expected to record a maximum of 30.8°C, while Kathua in Jammu could see 34.2°C.
Weather set to turn
The weather is now expected to change, with rain likely to bring some relief from the heat across North India.
According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, isolated to scattered rainfall is expected over Delhi, Haryana and Punjab between October 6 and 11, and over Uttar Pradesh between October 6 and 10. The change is also likely in the mountains, with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall forecast over Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh from Tuesday (October 6).
Rain across India
Rain is not limited to North India. Isolated to scattered rainfall is also expected over parts of central India, including Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh, between October 6 and 10, and over Vidarbha on October 6 and 7.
The same is expected over east and northeast India, with moderate to heavy lightning expected over Gangetic West Bengal from October 6 to 8.
Meanwhile, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is forecast over Kerala and coastal Karnataka, with heavy rain likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The rain comes as the southwest monsoon continues its retreat from the country.
