A 60-year-old former sarpanch of Manewal village was allegedly shot dead in Ludhiana. The deceased, identified as Navtej Singh alias Neetu, was allegedly shot dead by two men on a bike in Ladhuwal when he was returning home on Saturday.

His family claimed that his brother killed him over a land dispute.

The two assailants blocked his Toyota Innova and allegedly fired multiple shots.

The crime occurred around 7 pm.

Police sources said that at least 10 rounds were fired on the spot, but it is yet to be confirmed how many bullets hit him.

The incident was also caught on the dashcam of his Innova.

Though he was rushed to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, doctors declared him brought dead.

His son, Alamjit Singh, who is a lawyer, alleged that his father was murdered in a "preplanned manner" and named eight people in the police complaint, including his uncle Pal Singh, family members, and the current village head.

"The motive behind this murder is that we have a land dispute with them, and cases are currently pending in the court," he said.

Alamjit also said that they had threatened him and his father "many times".

An FIR has been registered, and an investigation has been initiated.

Navtej Singh served as the sarpanch of Manewal village during the Shiromani Akali Dal–Bharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP) coalition tenure in Punjab.

According to local police reports, he later extended political support to both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Assistant Commissioner of Police (West) Jatinderpal Singh said that a land dispute within the family was suspected to be the reason behind the killing. “Prima facie, the deceased had a land dispute within the extended family. Seven identified accused have been booked, and they will be arrested soon,” said the ACP.
