Scandals, revelations, natural disasters, and more pertinently, global conflicts and their fallouts have played a key role in impacting US elections that are held in November. Such a significant event or development just a month before the polls is termed the ‘October Surprise’, a term that gained popular currency in 1980.

There is now widespread speculation that Iran might undertake pre-emptive strikes against targets in West Asia in October. This is keeping in mind that the US goes to the mid-term polls on November 3, 2026.

There may be several baskets of possible Iranian targets. The US military bases that could be used to attack Iranian targets are spread all over the Persian Gulf, including the 5th Fleet HQ in Bahrain and the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Besides Israel, oil targets, and choke points, state targets could include Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, etc. This could result in the ‘October Surprise’ phenomenon.

Such an all-out attack by Iran would make oil prices go into a tizzy, which would result in massive inflationary tendencies in the US economy. Because of the global conflict, oil prices are already averaging $4.43 per gallon, sitting well above the historical $3.00 baseline.

The impact of such a development on the Indian economy would be much more harmful.

Firstly, India is energy-dependent on foreign supplies. Already under tremendous pressure because of the Hormuz choke, the Indian economy is barely managing its essential energy supplies, including LPG and LNG. Other crucial commodities whose supplies will suffer immensely in the event of an ‘October Surprise’ are fertilisers and industrial chemicals like helium and sulphur.

Secondly, the Indian economy faces inflationary pressure during the October to December period, which is the traditional season for festivals and marriages in India. This is the time when consumer demand rises along with gold prices. An ‘October Surprise’ at this time would have a serious adverse impact on the Indian economy.

Thirdly, the sudden price rise will bring to a head the growing political tussle between the ruling establishment and the opposition, adding fuel to the opposition's fire, which is already gearing up for a fight over the controversy regarding unheeded dissension within the Election Commission. It has the potential to shake the ruling political dispensation to its core.

In a nutshell, an all-out Iranian ‘October Surprise’ would deal a big blow to India and its economy.
